Tension Problems?

Hey all-

Sorry if this is a repeat, feel free to flame me if that's the case. Here's the problem:

The other day I noticed that the tension in my left barrel adjuster was too slack and so I could only use the lower gears on my bike. I tightened it up and then today I noticed that my chain is scraping the outermost side of my front derailleur cage whenever I shift onto the higher sprocket. I haven't changed the trim on my barrel adjuster yet, but I have a feeling that will be the fix. Do you guys have any suggestions for what else it might be or what I can do to prevent this in the future? I ride an '82 Peugeot 10-speed, btw, it's my first road bike and I've only had it for about 3 months so I'm still adjusting.

Thanks for the help!
