Reminds me of this woman I used to see riding once in a while, grinding up hills in the big ring about 40 rpm. I slowed down once, chatted a bit, gently explained the benefit of a lower gear and spinning a bit more. She was convinced she was doing it the right way ..... waddya gonna do ?

I think the sayings about "leading a horse to water" and "beating a dead horse" could be cleverly combined somehow.
