you didn't mention size or brand of tire that flatted, what type of flat? Did you pump up the tires before the ride? I wouldn't be too hasty to get new tires until I found out what caused the flat.
You don't always carry a patch kit? if not you should unless you like walking home, I don't like walking home in cycling shoes.
as for CO2 cartridges if you do NOT use the threaded cartridges, buy them at a sporting goods store that sells air guns. I got a box of 25 cartridges for about $6.
