I'm in the "do what you like" camp.
Some of my bikes have 'em, some don't. My Panasonic lost its stand and never missed it.
I only find it essential on my folders, which sort of need the stands down while I raise the seat posts. Oh, and on my hybrid when I need to set up the trailer.
