Commuting, Running, Shower, Chamois Cream, Antibacterial discussion
I have some compound questions and figured this would be the best place for them.
First let me get the disclaimer out: there will be discussion regarding saddle sores. I know some people want to know. I really don't get it...we are all bikers, we all deal with it or preventing it, let's just be adults here...
So I commute (duh) and have started running at work. We have lockers and shower facility.
Recently, I developed, I guess it is, a saddle sore (about the size of a nickel, lumpy red and sore...turned purple after I messed and squeezed on it... With nothing coming out) on my inner thigh. About 2-3 inches down from where my leg connects to my body. There are a few things that could have occured: 1) basic cleaning/getting out of clothes problem 2) test riding a few new bikes in cargo shorts 3) running at work. 4) My saddle(s) don't work with my thighs and I'm getting rub action. Or a combination...
So obviously I want to prevent this from happening again. Test rides are over and I have a new bike. Let's address the others.
Cleaning. I looked at two stores last night and came away with no antibacterial soap. It's all about how well it moisturizes, smells, or will make you attractive to females. Do they not list this anymore? Is any Dial soap antibacterial? Are there any special soaps? I do not like extremely smelly ...anything. Also, bar soap or liquid? I have moved to liquid because bar soap is hard to keep from going soggy at work, but I'm not married to it. We have the half length high school sized lockers so I'm not sure how a caddy would do, space wise.
Running. I've always ran in boxers. Just habit I guess. My thighs/hamstrings have a habit of brushing each other so I don't want to do tighty whities. Should I get sone compression shorts to make them more slick? Do runners put cream on their parts? I was always a sprinter so this is foreign.
Saddles. I'm not sure this I really the problem. Would say a Brooks leather saddle prevent the inner thigh rubbage (if that's the problem) being leather? I just saw yesterday someone mention saddle fitting. I didn't know this happened. I thought people just unloaded money on saddles until they liked something.
Cream. I've not used this before and almost bought some. Good thing I didn't. I found out (in rather painful ways) when I was younger that I am allergic to whatever is in Icy Hot. Almost bought some Assos, which would have been a catastrophe. What is good lube, antibacterial, and non cool/warming wise? I assume this would this be good for running as well? I have yet to have an issue on the underside, just inner thighs if that is helpful.
I've commuted for two years now, you'd think I'd have this worked out. Some things have changed though. Started riding my La Cruz instead of my Singlecross last October, moved closer to work which makes me lazy to put on bike shorts.
Any help is much appreciated. Took a few days off the bike, haven't ran in a while, and need to get back on it as Ragnar Northwest Passage is creeping up on me.
