if your current chain is still in good shape, just remove the excess links and join it with a wipperman link.

i am currently running an ultegra 10-sp chain on my otherwise all centaur group, with excellent results (it was all my lbs had, and i wanted to get on the road fast). all 10-sp chains are very very close to the same width.

shortening your existing chain is the best bet though.
