You may be correct but as I said I live in the land of Proposition 13. Our perspectives are totally different. No new taxes, Tax revolts and they cannot raise our property taxes by enough to cover transportation losses. Roody is correct in his assessment that there simply isn't any available funds for the transportation we have let alone any new transportation programs. Yes we could all use more public transportation but when we already have so many people living in areas like orange county, Riverside and San Bernardino county that are more like giant suburbs than anything else. Two of those counties are the largest in the state. Because so far no transportation programs are assessing the needs of areas like the three I just mentioned ant tax increase would have to go before the people. I can bet a paycheck it would never pass.

Our govenor is planning on giving the driving public back 3 cents of the state gas tax as it is. That 3 cents is the part that many transportation districts are using now. People will not be calling for the government to take the tax break back I can assure you. What I am saying is that with transportation already underfunded and with fares already less than needed cutting those fares to free would be like driving a nail in the coffin of public transportation. I do not believe voters in the US will reach deeper into their pocket to pay for a transportation system they themselves do not use. So if it doesn't include the Suburbs and the counties I have mentioned are mostly suburbs then the vote will fall short.

We are not a united people when it comes to what some see as social programs. At best we are divided 50/50. But we as a nation tend to be united in one way, we do not like taxes. California recalled Grey Davis on the one issue, raising car registrations. The voters of this state will fight any tax increase that doesn't help them directly. IMHO.
