We are not a united people when it comes to what some see as social programs. At best we are divided 50/50. But we as a nation tend to be united in one way, we do not like taxes. California recalled Grey Davis on the one issue, raising car registrations. The voters of this state will fight any tax increase that doesn't help them directly. IMHO.
I hate to keep bringing it up, but people do vote to increase taxes for public transit. In my city it was 2 to 1 in favor of the millage increase for CATA. But I think people have to be convinced that the bus company is responsibly managed before they will vote for it. Also, I have a hunch that people would be less likely to support bus service if the fares were free.
