Don't get your wool knickers all bunched up folks. Coyote lives in an area where road cycling was quite vibrant in the 1950 and 1960s unlike many other parts of North America. He is a purveyor of fine vintage equipment that is often quite rare. This is an appraisals forums and he knows the cranks are valuable, but many of us know that these values vary widely over time. Clearly he wishes to... either

A. decide whether the cranks in question are worth the effort to obtain for resale.
B. Decide whether to offer them at a fixed price or put them on ebay.

I find it really annoying that people with less knowledge (you should know who you are) take shots at those with more because they have made a mistake or have commented on something clearly out of their knowledge base league. This happens way to often, I might ad, with a particular individual. Furthermore, attempts at sarcasm only work when the poster has exhibited some credibility when it comes to a topic.
