1) Having a triple (albeit on a tandem, but with Dura Ace shifters, and derailleurs) and a compact, I'll take the shifting on the compact.
2) your post talks about racing. I doubt there are many courses in the South east that you're not going to be dropped if you need a gear below 34/28
