when I've come across these situations I go left and take the lane and I don't squeeze between the traffic and the cop. it's one or the other - I might wait for traffic to let up so I can take the lane. taking the lane makes the issues apparent enough to the cop that a verbal exchange isn't required. up here that seems to working OK
It was slow, bumper-to-bumper traffic, getting around him and back in the bike lane was the only thing I could do. There was no risk there. He'd stop me for saying that? Nah
