8C this morning, with a bit of a wind from the northwest. Slowed me down when I was heading north, but gave me a bit of a boost when heading east. Ideally, the wind will shift a bit to the northeast for my ride home, and it'll push me the whole way.
Yesterday on the way home, I got involved in a little silly commuter race with some guy who looked about 10 years older and 50 pounds heavier than me. Looked like easy pickings to me, but holy crap was he ever fast, and at a slow cadence, too! I finally got near him when he got slowed by some pedestrians on a MUT, and that's when I noticed the huge rear hub, the tell-tale sign of an electric-assist bicycle. I didn't feel so bad then. Our paths diverged, and I thought I saw the last of him.
15 minutes later, we met up again at a traffic light. I guess we took two different routes to arrive at the same point. At that point, it was straight road for about a mile before my next turn. The light turned green, and I took off as fast as I could. I don't have a speedometer on that bike, so I don't know exactly how fast I was going, but I figure it was at least 30 km/h. A few blocks down the road, and I see electric bike buddy out of the corner of my eye...my right eye...he was about to pass me on the sidewalk. 30+km/h on a sidewalk. Well, he had to slow down to get around a vehicle pulling out of a driveway, and he hopped on the road at that point and chased me down to the next lights. I thought about lecturing him on the perils of sidewalk riding at fast speeds, but I think perhaps he had already learned. My turn was a block away, so our paths diverged again, and that was that.
