Why?

If you put it on the drive side and you lay the bicycle down, the deraillers and the sensor are not on the ground. That is, all the nasty/delicate bits are on one side.



Sanding, it would seem to me, not be a good idea. You might try some alcohol. I doubt that you will get all of the stain out.
