I like the Salsa Casseroll. It would be perfect for commuting. It'll take a little bit bigger tire, and still have plenty of room for full fenders (gotta have 'em in Portland.) But, the thing I like most, is the fact that you can use caliper brakes (long reach) instead of cantilevers. I think the build quality is a little better than Surly also.
