Bikes: Lots

Randonneurs ride just about every imaginable human powered piece of equipment. I've seen racing bicycles, touring bicycles, sport touring bicycles (mine! ), tandems, triplettes, recumbents of all shapes and sizes and configurations, trikes, tandem recumbents, fixed gear, single speed, antique, and even a kick-bike. Plus there's a guy who rides the STP (not a Randonneuring event, but still a long distance ride) on a unicycle.

Randonneuris also carry a wide variety of gear from a tiny seat pack with a few basic items to panniers and a handlebar bag. It all depends on what you are comfortable with.

Because Randonneurs need to be self sufficient, you should be able to keep up your fuel intake, have enough clothing to make it through a variety of weather conditions, and carry enough tools to be able to make basic repairs. I divide up my list as follows:

1. Bicycle: this includes my bicycle itself (making sure it is in good repair and set up correctly), my waterbottles, racks, lights, computer, etc.

2. Tools: tire changing stuff (pump, tubes, folding tire, levers, patches, and boots), a multitool, etc.

3. Medical: pain killers, bandages, sunscreen, anti-bacterial soap, baby wipes, space blanket, cream, etc.

4. Clothing: rain gear, reflective gear, extra shorts for the longer distances, a second pair of socks, etc.

5. Personal: ID, camera, money, etc.

6. Nutrition: energy bars, gels, gatorade powder etc.

And occasionally if I'm going to be camping before or after a brevet, I'll include the 7th category:

7. Camping (but I don't usually carry this stuff on a brevet)
