Philadelphia Communte Help

Hey Guys,

So my fiance and I are moving to Philly this summer and since we will only have one car I thought it would be a good time for me to start commuting. I have only traveled to Philly once for a Medical School interview and so i didn't get a good idea of the city as my time spent there was in a classroom and getting a tour of school facilities. I am thinking a single speed/fixed gear will be the best best for me as I do not want to have to mess with a derailleur anymore.

What I am asking you guys from that area is do you think a ss is good for the city? Also if so what gear ratio should I look into running. I am thinking a surly steamroller will be a good bike for the job or a Kilo WT because of their ability to run larger tires in the winter.

So please impart some knowledge. Thanks!
