upgrading my steel-frame Club Fuji...

Hi there, I'm new here so I apologize if this thread is started in the wrong place or at the wrong time....

I've got a steel club fuji that I like quite a bit and I've been commuting on it successfully for the past few years, but now I'd really like to upgrade some of the components. One thing that's driving me crazy is the front derailleur as well as the brakes...

regarding the front derailleur - should I just pick up something like http://bit.ly/agPi7J ? Seems like that's a pretty good deal and it's guaranteed to work with the rest of the components on there, which are old and most importantly it's a 6-speed freewheel.

Then brakes - I can find some pretty good deals on new quality shimano brakes like the 105 - is that something I should consider putting on there or is there another kind? Mainly i want more stopping power because I'm also gonna throw a rack on it to do some light weekend touring.

comments and opinions welcome!
