If I had to guess, I'd suspect a broken strand in the wheel sensor to mount wire. I wonder if the "bike guy" snagged it while working on the bike. Cadence is a different wire.

My experience with Cat Eye's, old and new, is that they are highly reliable and easy to set up and adjust. If yours is getting no reading, there is something seriously broken.
