Fill a big pan of Simple Green and hot water (I got mine at Goodwill for a buck). Let the parts soak overnight, and most of the sludge will fall off. What doesn't will come off in a hot water rinse. Use the tooth brush for nooks and crannies. Pat dry, lubricate as needed, and re-assemble.

A Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner will works wonders, as well.
