Brakes and Studded Tires on a Steamroller

In putting together my winter ice bike, several people in my community have wondered whether the Surly Steamroller would work with both 700X35 studded Nokians and a front brake.
At the following site, the writer has put Nokians on his Steamroller, but he had to shim his axle in order to get brake clearance:

This doesn't seem like a good arrangement, to me.

At my present skill level, I need a front brake.
I do not want to go back to the geared ice bike I used last winter, and I do not want to fall again, as I did a few weeks ago.
This means, to me, a fixed gear bike with studded tires and a front brake.
The Surly Steamroller comes within millimeters of accomplishing this with Nokians and the Shimano 105 front brake.

Can anyone suggest another way of doing this?
A different brake, perhaps?
Some other brand of premium studded tire that will clear the brake?
Grind some metal off of the 105's?

Thanks.
