The old Sturmey-Archer AW 3-speed hub uses four excruciatingly tiny springs to preload the pawls, and there is a procedure spelled out by Sheldon Brown's site for reinstalling these fairy clothespin madre springs.

My mistake: Not reading and following the directions closely.

The springs fly off into space, and atomically blend with whatever matter they get in contact with.
