Alloy and chromoly/cromoly/chro-moly/cromor/etc. are bicycle jargon and as such, cyclists know exactly what is meant by the terms.

In chemistry, chemical names can get quite long and complex so we naturally shorten them up whenever possible. PolyEthylene Glycol becomes PEG, for example. 6-Carboxyfluorescein is simply 6-FAM.
