Bike companies (like car companies, motorcycle companies, etc.) will do limited edition, envelope pushing bikes for a variety of reasons: to further their brand image, create buzz, explore markets and technology and show what they can do.
It's humorous to read the reactions of practical, utilitarian cyclist to this.
Anyway, this Cannondale OnBike makes the District Carbon look blasé (ouch! Sorry, Trek!)

I have no idea why
you would, but yours is not the only path through life. I know plenty of folks that paid more for off road motorcycles, horses and personal watercraft plus bought a $32,000 pick up to haul them to a place they could be ridden.
