IMO, the whole "flex" issue really shouldn't be a problem to anyone who's not in a serious race. To me it sounds like folks have bought into catalog/bike magazine hype about flex.
I commute my fixed gear, which has a low end steel frame with plenty of flex. I think it's great for commuting because the bike just feels cushiony. It has only been a problem when I take it to the velodrome because it feels mushy while going like 30 mph
