Much more convenient to set your max early, stay out of the nickle and dime up-ante, and walk away. Set it and forget it. Maybe you'll have a nice surprise waiting for you when you come home from the movies/dinner/weekend vacation.

Exactly the mentality I've taken after losing many, many auctions. I stopped with the small bids in the last seconds because I usually end up losing it by a dollar or two. Then I'm even more upset. Rather just set a bid that I'd like to pay and just leave. I either get an email that I won or I don't. If it's something I really want, then I'll bid accordingly high and sort of "guarantee" it.

By the way, that's how I won the Super Record front and rear derailleur for $51 shipped. Bid $125 and left. The other competitors didn't feel like one-upping me I guess

Anyway, Shopgirl...there will always be more deals. I'd suggest Craigslist over eBay for complete bikes.
