My (sort of) roadified mountain bike I bought off a guy on craigslist to use as a commuter. He added drop bars, fenders, slicks, moved the shifters to the stems, added old school brake levers (with the extra side levers attached so you can pull them from the tops of the bars - that's how old they are) and biopace chainrings and I've since added lights, better tiress, a rack, and a better saddle (not pictured) and removed his bar bag and ineffective rear rack that was for looks only. Sure it's heavy as sin and still runs mountain bike gearing, but it's essentially a bomb-proof commuter for a clyde like me. Could I have bought a road bike that could do everything this can a little better/easier? Probably. Would I still like a road bike? Absolutely. But for $100 (before the modifications I made), I found a bike that fit me on CL where the pickings were scarce and am getting some miles in. Gets me something I can use to do what I want until I get the cash to get something nice.
