Campy Ergo levers are way more affordable than Shimano STI. Best prices I've seen are on Ribble.
except the cassette and derailers are far cheaper for shimano.

and no, campy 10sp is not compatible with 8sp.
campy 10sp levers can be setup with shimano 9sp, but it's very finicky and not as accurate as a proper shimano only or campy only setup. As soon as there's some chain wear... it gets jumpy and sloppy.
