they have the potential to be light, which is relative AND most bikes that get raced on a velodrome are not as light as bikes that get raced on the road, two different types of machine. Fast, what a n00b thing to say, it's entirely situational, ESPECIALLY for a fixed gear.

They are also good for killing worn race tires, which fits into the fun category.
