As I mentioned in this forum before, I find it hard to be comfortable riding in bay area city streets after years of bicycling in bliss in SE Wisconsin.
The cage drivers here are just not bike friendly enough to feel safe sharing the streets with. That plus the red mist road rage I see everyday when I drive to work, and the congestion fighting with cars to make forward progress during rush hour. So less traveled country roads or even large office or residential parks are my preference for safer riding. when I can find them.
Even cyclists here are not innocent. I've experienced unneccesary rudenes as a pedestrian from cyclists in downtown SF many times when they think it's a green light for them even when the crosswalk signals say it isn't, screaming at pedestrians to get out of their way. Yes, there are a lot of stupid cage drivers out there, but we also have to remember to be good street citizens as cyclists if our opinions are to be listened to and respected, because those pedestrians that experience rudeness from cyclists might then transmit that anger and disrespect towards cyclsits when they get in their cars.
