I always carry mine on and stow it under the seat. If you must check it, I would put it in a sturdy cardboard box inside your suitcase. Fill the extra space in the box with clothes. Wrap more clothes around the outside of the box. Your suitcase is going to be tossed around and squished multiple times during a plane flight.
