I'm not a fan of link-wire cantilevers, so the BR-550 isn't high on my list. Not that they aren't a good brake; I just don't like them. For a bike with panniers where you need the clearance, they're a good choice and more cost effective than the Pauls.

I use Tektro CR720s front and rear on my Cross Check. No panniers to deal with clearance issues, and the overall cantilever profile is similar to the Paul N-R or Velo Orange Grand Cru, both of which are based on an old Mafac design.
