Not all trails are up or down. Generally you use the bigger gears for flats or slight descents, espceially on fire road... One of my favorite trails is a slight grind uphill (about 1 - 3% grade with a few short 6% climbs) for 10 miles. Coming back I will be in the large chainring pedalling downhill.
