In addition to supporting a local shop, buying from an LBS is like insurance. I try and buy what I can from the LBS, but I also buy somethings online when the price difference is too great. I recently bought a Giant TCR SL frame from my shop but the groupset from ShinyBikes. The groupset was $600 cheaper online. I can't justify throwing that money out as a gift to the local shop. However, I did buy other things like the bars and stem when the gross dollars wasn't as extreme. It actually just ended up biting me in the ass yesterday when the shop put the bike together and found out the right shifter isn't working properly. Campy told me to pound sand and that I have to deal with ShinyBikes because I didn't buy the group at a brick and mortar. I'm sure Shiny will take care of it, but this is going to add another 3-4 weeks to the process. If I had bought this at the shop, they would have taken care of everything.
