both my grandparents were employees of "Ma Bell", the original A.T.&T., so as a kid they taught us to memorize the names of our family's exchanges...I still remember: Dickens, Diamond, and Garfield...(but can't recall the one in San Francisco for my Mom's parents...it'll come back to me) I guess it was just a sort of trivia game that phone co. people played.
