Themajor downside to internally geared hub is that they are less mechanically efficient.

That said, a 14 speed internally geared hub, with a carbon fiber belt drive would be great in the riight application; i.e. high performance commuter bike, with no mess and low maitainence.

The Gates Belt drive system may well create a market for internally geared hubs.
