When I went to the States a few years ago, for some reason I couldn't help exaggerating my accent. It was like deer trapped in the headlights. I'd say something and they'd just stare. It was mesmerising for both parties.
We're also over polite, too. If you want something, saying "Umm.....not sure......maybe I'll have one of those..and maybe that one too, please, if that's okay" is a big mistake. The only way to get service in the US is to push in and yell "I'LL HAVE ONE OF THOSE RIGHT HERE! W00T!!!!!".
