I have toured a great many times along the west side of North America from Fairbanks Alaska to San Fransisco and have always used a high quality cable lock. For camping in areas where there is nothing to lock my bike to, I carry a metal pin with a cable secured to a top ring (similiar to a very large tent peg) which I drive into the ground beneath the middle of my tent. I attach my bike cable lock to this. Anyone trying to make off with my bike will wake me for sure.
