Cutting the wrong end is no different than removing the chain for some other reason and using a new joining pin to rejoin it. Shimano is the only brand that uses this method and approves of it. Most other brands prefer to use a master link. Joining pins are always the weak link in the chain.
Campy's 10 speed chain is not recommended to be removed, but if it is, the joining pin should be removed and a master link should be used to rejoin it (not Campy recommnded, but it works). The Campy 11 chain can be rejoined with the up to two additional joining pins, but at $8 each, they are not real practical.
