Is it possible to convert to a non-threaded tube?

Not sure if you really want to. My '02 Giant OCR has a steerer tube 'converter' on it which has a nut in it. Screw the nut down and the steerer/fork is fixed. On the top end you just put a regular (read modern) stem.

The converter looks something like this:

This would basically take a threaded/non-threaded problem out of the equation.
