Actually, there are those of us who do not ride for health or fitness, but because we prefer to get around that way, and our bike is our favored vehicle. In other words, we don't ride for "real health/fitness," we ride for real, making us the more real bikers than the "real health/fitness" riders.
Just to be clear, this purpose is completely legitimate and real, as are other purposes (eg, "recreation")!
All I am saying is that I think the argument that MHL eliminate a health benefit might be false.

Many cyclists have started as casual riders who may have been dissuaded by having to wear the Magic Foam Hat, or more likely, dissuaded by the false sense of imperilment which Magic Foam Hats create. Which then depletes the reservoir of riders who eventually will fit your made-up classification of "real" riders, thus proving the point of the authors.
Who knows if this is true! The supposed "health benefits" are just
assumed.
