I went for a mountain bike ride this weekend because it was really windy, and I haven't been on my mountain bike in awhile. I went up a steep 4-wheel-drive road with lots of ruts. I learned that I need to know how to set the sag on my suspension fork. I never did. It's fine for riding downhill, flat, and mild uphills, but on really steep uphills the front end gets so light that it lifts off the ground with the slightest pedal stroke. Then I lose the ability to steer and I have to get off and walk. My fork has a setting where it takes most of the spring out for riding on relatively flat surfaces. When I activated that, the front end dropped an inch or so. That was enough to make a lot of difference. Suddenly I could ride up much steeper sections. I'm thinking if I get my sag (preload?) set properly it will be even better.
