Even cheaper than Craig's List is a dumpster or metal pile as a source of bikes to begin working on. Take apart headsets and bottom brackets and hubs. I've been doing my own maintenence for thirty-five years, but about twnty years ago I started working on discarded bikes and have learned an awful lot more about bikes, and have some pretty nice ones made out of found parts.
