I rode it recently, in May, twice to Bear Mountain/Harriman State Park. You can simply follow route 9W or the NYS Bicycle Route #9 that goes along Route 9W with some detours. Read my thoughts about it here.

How about riding it all the way up to Bear Mountain from Queens, 65 miles, on a loaded steel touring bike with camping gear (bike+gear=90lbs) and then coming back next day? I did that twice in preparation for my tour of Adirondacks next month. It's really not that bad. You guys are falling victims of the super-light bike fad

BTW, I hit 37mph on downhills, I couldn't go any faster due to MTB gearing on the bike and lots of drag (two sets of panniers, tent, etc). Yeah, that can be a bit scary
