That's pretty much it. The lighthead itself seems fine. For battery packs that smoke/catch fire, I'd assume that was caused by a frayed wire short circuit. Keep an eye on the wires for ANY high energy battery system, and repair/replace as necessary.

I bought 1m extension cables for the MagicShine from DealExtreme, they were about $3 each shipped, that gave me a supply of male and female connectors. So far I've only replaced the connector on the spare 8 cell pack I bought from Tenergy (NOT a MagicShine pack) which had "almost but not quite" the right connector on it, but I've got spares in case one of the connectors dies later.

I'd agree with most of this, and have been careful enough to avoid damaging any of the wiring yet and haven't replace the battery either. I got the extension cable and helmet mount when I bought mine from Geoman (it was part of the standard order then), wrapped the battery with electrical tape and put it in the rack trunk. I had been using a Fenix L2D before this, and have a hard time telling when it's on when used with the Magicshine.
