Yes. Think about the guy who just dropped off the front and is now trying to latch onto the back. The last thing he needs is some yahoo in the front with relatively fresh legs bumping the speed up a few mph.
It's quite simple. Just take note as to how fast you're going and keep it there when you pull through.
I also can't believe how much communication and talking seems to go on at some of your rides. "I'm slowing down", "I'm speeding up," "We lost someone," "Can we go slower?" What the...?
Guess I'm used to more cut throat riding. You either keep up or you're dropped. You're forced early on to get strong fast.
