You're probably riding in ranges that are actually below your true ranges. If you choose not to go over 170, the max you are capable of achieving (this is what maxhr is) is something larger. If you base your training levels (proper heartrates) on this assumed maximum, your won't be working in your true proper ranges.

Instead of using a false maximum, you can do a Conconi test and see what your actual lactate threashold is. This LT measurement is not precise, but you're using an erroneous value now. It won't
