I recognized my bike because it was MY bike. It was a Trek Hybrid with a swapped out flat bar, 1.25 slicks, a (take-off) GT road saddle, different pedals, etc... It has a unique profile; when I saw it from 50ft away I knew what it was. When I got closer I could see through some of the patchy spray paint work to the original green underneath. It was locked, but not to the stand, so I carried it that way to the bike shop and had them cut the thief's u-lock off. It cost me like $60 for a new lock and the cutting, but that was still easier than finding a new campus bike.
