I think the chain/cassette wear issue is a little overblown; I don't kill them any faster in the rainy season than in the dry season. As long as they're staying wet, they're lubricated - you're only in trouble if the sun comes out!

It does kill the other parts I mentioned a little faster, but those are much cheaper.
