I read something interesting in a blog by a Dutch rabobank rider but I don't remember who it was. He kind of nonchalantly wrote that pros either train for three days and then take one day off or, do one other variation of that. I wish I remembered more but it's very different from something like 6 days in a row.

I think nowadays they are doing a lot of blood analysis to take extra care to avoid overtraining. As for weights, I think of VdV. He says he used to ride long and slow in the off season but that it was pointless. Now in the off season he rides for just an hour or two really intensely and does a lot of leg presses.
