Worth it to upgrade from a 10speed Triple?
Hi All,
I purchased a 2010 Giant Defy 1 a couple of months ago. I've been progressively getting better and I'm almost at a 10 mile per day average. I liked the idea of a triple crank when I purchased the bike because there are a lot of hills where I live and I thought it would make life easier. Instead, I find I'm extremely unhappy with the way my bike shifts front gears (it requires a good forceful shift and hold just to get from middle to big ring). I've had them adjusted once to no avail.
Since I have never used the little ring (Even on the biggest hills my 39/25 seems adequate), I'm thinking about changing parts to a double crank. I want the upgrade from a 50t to 53t, and the middle ring should be an even 39t to 39t swap. I currently have 105 10 speed shifters, chain, and cassette.
I'm assuming I'll need a new crank and BB obviously. My FD should be adjustable to a double, right? Same with the shifters/etc.
Is it worth the effort? I'm assuming a double is much easier and more reliable when shifting unless you can get the right person to properly set up the triple (which I haven't found yet.)
